Benefits of Massage

Benefits of Massage

Massage has always been looked at as an “amenity”, but did
you know that it can be very therapeutic as well? Here are some of the many
benefits that massage can have on the human body:

  • Relieves stress (caused by daily life)
  • Reduces inflammation and helps muscle recovery after workouts
  • Reduces anxiety by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Boots natural serotonin to lessen depression
  • Effective in treating inflammatory and autoimmune conditions (Swedish massage)
  • Improves immunity

Massage during Pregnancy

Modern research has proven that massage during pregnancy can be a very good suplement to add to your prenatal care. It can address many common aches, pains and discomforts associated with changes to the skeletal and circulatory system caused by hormone changes during this time. Regular prenatal massages can lead to:

  • Decreasing symptoms of depression and increase levels of serotonin
  • Relieve many discomforts associated with pregnancy
  • Improve labor outcomes as well as newborn health (inside the womb)
  • Hormone regulation by increasing dopamine and serotonin levels
  • Swelling reduction due to edema as well as water retention
  • Improvement of common nerve pain associated with pelvic tilt and growing fetus

It is recommended to get massages at least bi-weekly during the first two trimesters and once a week during the last month to see and feel results. The safety of our clients is most important and while almost every pregnant woman gets massages, it is important you consult your doctor before making an appointment to assure your baby and yourself are in good standing health.

Aromatherapy during Pregnancy

Oils are a great way to enhance any massage. Not only do they smell great, they aid in easing the discomforts of pregnancy and provide a sense of nurture in this fragile state. Like foot massage, Aromatherapy too has much common misconceptions. Used the correct way, oils can serve a great purpose during pregnancy by allevating insomnia, fatigue and many other symptoms. Common oils that are safe to use in prenatal care are: Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Chamomille, and Tangerine. These oils along with many others help with:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Reducing swollen, tired, achy feet
  • Constipation
  • Overall relaxation
  • Stuffy nose
  • Insomnia
  • Prevent and treat colds and viruses

Just as Aromatherapy aids during the prenatal stages, there are also oils to help in naturally inducing labor for those mommies that want to get a head start. Some of these oils are: Rosemary, Clary Sage, Peppermint, and Jasmine. If you have or had any of the following, it is best to consult your midwife, doula, or OB/GYN:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Epilepsy
  • Blood clots
  • Heart problems
  • Diabetes
  • Miscarriages
  • Thyroid, liver or kidney disease
